Made from Baltic Birch, it is designed with pre-clearances to accommodate all currently available CS:R and R2.0 greeblies as assembled.
“T-BONE” JOINTS SIZED FOR BALTIC BIRCH
“1/2 inch” Baltic Birch is not really half inch, it’s .472 inch – 12mm. U-Joints routed with a ½” bit will have an air gap on all sides, which can result in a loose assembly relying on glue to fill up the gaps. Wood glue has no inherent strength and isn’t designed to be a filler, it requires intimate contact of surfaces to wick the glue into the wood’s cells – that’s why every glued wood project you’ve ever seen involves clamping surfaces together. The SpenCS:R joints have been designed to have 3-side stopped contact and are sized for slip-to-press fit of the Baltic Birch for strength, with tapered leads on the joints for ease of assembly. Fully seated joints in assembly will result in a solid frame that is a true cylinder at the correct diameter without additional restraint during optional gluing. In fact, the initial completed droid (shown above) doesn’t have a drop of glue in the frame assembly, and the skins never went on before final assembly of the droid. A #5 wood screw was put at each joint for insurance instead after assembly, which allows for removal of local sections for future upgrade installations.
Top plate includes notch for CS:R LDP and is predrilled to mount a Rockler bearing. Again, all joints for upright pieces have tapered-lead t-bone joints and are depth-compensated for the 18mm (.709”) material.
The main uprights are pre-drilled to accept ½-13 t-nuts for 2 leg and 3 leg mounting of legs – no gas pipe is needed unless that’s your thing. One position’s worth of t-nuts are included in kit. Also included are dowels for alignment to top and bottom plates and shoulder spacer rings that sandwich between uprights and standard aluminum leg to body hubs that can be used without modification.
All pockets on the bottom plate have been positioned and sized for available CS:R greeblies. Holes are pre-drilled for skirt mounting (the droid above has a Mars Props composite skirt). Starter corner holes are drilled for cutting out the center ankle rectangle, or leave solid depending on your mounting preference. 4 holes are also included for the SpenCS:R mounting method, I’d be happy to talk you through it. And again, all joints for upright pieces have tapered-lead t-bone joints and are depth-compensated for the 18mm (.709”) material.
The kit includes:
17) pieces 12mm Baltic birch
1) piece .250” (LDP quarter ring)
8) pieces 18mm Baltic Birch (including shoulder spacers)
(Pieces are marked with numbers and letters corresponding to joint locations for assembly)
4) ½” dowels
8) ½-13 T-nuts for shoulder locations
